Phlebotomy vs. CalMag Dosing for Hemochromatosis

While I’m known for doing a lot of Ironman triathlons, a lesser-known fact is my body tends to accumulate iron. No relationship between these two, I’m told.

This condition of iron build-up is called Hemochromatosis.

Because high iron is not healthy, phlebotomies are used by people with hemochromatosis to reduce iron levels. Bloodletting. That’s right, the single known remedy in modern medicine is to have a bag of blood pulled out of you.

But, would it not be wild if there was a simple alternative?

After a decade of experiments, I feel like it’s time to share an alternative approach that is working 100% of the time for me.

Check out this side-by-side comparison. The first three are iron levels before/after doing traditional phlebotomies. The last four show iron levels before/after the regimen I developed which involves high dosages of Calcium and Magnesium (“CalMag Dosing”).

Both approaches work about the same for me.

Here is my data behind the graphic:

If you average out both methods, it’s basically the same for me.

About my CalMag Dosing regimin: For testing purposes I’ve used “Bluebonnet Liquid Calcium Magnesium Citrate + Vitamin D3.”

With this … historically every time I’ve had a high iron reading, I’d buy a bottle and take one giant swig a day for 7–10 days till the bottle is empty. Over the years, the only side effect I’ve noticed is diarrhea

#BREAKINGNEWS: Just this week, while at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale for my annual physical, I decided to re-test my iron after just three big gulps over three days … and to my surprise: 3 days was enough! (check out the far right column — 1st gulp on November 27, 2024).

Anyway, over this last decade all my healthcare providers simply raise their eyebrows, but never seem to be curious enough take a closer look.

I thought I’d say something. Would sure be interesting if this works for other people with hemochromatosis too.

Do check with your healthcare providers to make sure a few days of high Calcium and Magnesium is not going to complicate your health/life.

Anyway, ping me. I’d love to hear if it works for you.

This is what I’ve been testing with. I buy this at Whole Foods. And no, I don’t know anyone at that company. And, no one is paying me. And no, I have not tried to contact them.]

I’m sure the brand/flavor doesn’t matter.
